Coast Emergency Communications Association (CECA) is a dedicated group of volunteer, federally licensed amateur radio operators. The purpose of the association is to assist and provide accurate and efficient communications by assisting and supporting government agencies, first responders, and non-government organizations during emergencies and disasters that affect our region.
CECA is registered under the Societies Act of British Columbia and is a federally registered Canadian charity working in conjunction with the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo Emergency Program Managers and other responders. In addition, CECA members are part of the Public Service Lifeline Volunteer Program operated by The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, British Columbia.
While modern communication technologies such as cellular networks, internet services, and text messaging play an important role in everyday life, they can become unreliable or unavailable during major emergencies. Amateur radio remains a recognized and valuable communications resource for provincial and local governments because it can continue to operate when other systems fail.
Amateur radio operators provide a vital communications link before, during and after emergencies, helping government agencies and community organizations maintain essential communications until normal services are restored.
Our Mission
To provide trained volunteer amateur radio operators and dependable emergency communications services in support of public safety agencies, emergency management organizations, and our community during times of need.
Communication is conducted using voice, digital and microwave equipment. If you would like to assist your community, provide yourself with some different challenges, and are ready to learn new skills, this organization could be what you are looking for.
Our Motto
Amateur Radio is a hobby,
Emergency Communication is a commitment.
General meetings of the membership are held monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month for business and hands-on training.
